eLearning
eLearning refers to the process of acquiring knowledge or skills using a digital device, such as a computer, tablet, smartphone, or any other electronic device. As a volunteer instructional designer, I have developed the following products to present an actual portfolio. In return, clients allow me to present prototypes or one of their final products.
Communication Styles - Drag and Drop Activity
Tools: Storyline, Word, Amazon S3
My role: Researcher, Instructional Designer, Developer
Audience: Professionals learning how to distinguish communication styles.
Background and Inspiration: After 14 years without participating in formal interviews, I recently encountered a pivotal moment highlighting the importance of being well-versed in communication styles. During an interview, a manager asked me to name my communication style. Despite my extensive professional experience and being recognized by my peers as a good communicator and team player, I was trying to remember the specific name of my style. Instead, I described it to the best of my ability.
Reflection and Decision: This experience prompted a thorough self-reflection. Following the interview, I revisited the various communication styles to enhance my understanding and ensure I could accurately identify and articulate my style in the future.
Development Process: Recognizing the value of this knowledge, I decided to transform my review process into a practical learning tool that could benefit others facing similar challenges. I developed a drag-and-drop activity focused on communication styles to create an engaging and interactive learning experience. This activity is a resource for individuals to familiarize themselves with different communication styles, understand their characteristics, and identify their styles. It also inspires them to reflect on their styles and learn more about this topic.
The Writing Process
Tools: Storyline, Synthesia, PowerPoint (Storyboard), Canva, Amazon S3
My role: SME, Instructional designer, developer
Audience: Professionals looking for help lining up ideas and ensuring a logical flow of information when writing different business documents.
This product was developed as part of my learning path in Storyline Project Lab.
Delivering an Effective Performance Review
Tools: Articulate Rise 360, Canva, Genially, Amazon S3
My role: SME, Instructional designer, developer
Audience: New supervisors who don't have an academic background in management.
Challenge:
Supervisors require help in conducting performance reviews for their teams.
While they excel in their technical roles and have improved their leadership skills, they must develop skills to evaluate their team’s performance.
The absence of a thorough performance review hinders employee development, interpersonal communication, and identifying training needs.
Solution: I developed a self-paced training in Rise 360 to be completed in eight (8) weeks. The first module presents a brief summary of what a performance review is to set a foundation for the learners. Modules 2 through 5 will keep a more practical focus. Only Module 1 is available to see.
I developed this product as a requirement for an IDOL Academy badge. I wrote the case study and needs analysis after conversations with different leaders in the same manufacturing field. I also used my previous experience delivering three leadership training sessions to one company in this field.
If you want to read the needs analysis presentation, please get in touch with me.
Key Elements of a Strategic Plan
Tools: 7taps, Word (Storyboard)
My role: SME, Instructional designer, developer
Audience: Volunteers who are board members in a public library and need basic knowledge in strategic planning.
Challenge: Members come from different professional and educational backgrounds and need to immerse in the strategic planning process.
Solution: I designed and developed this microlearning tool to help my fellow board members start working on the LPL Strategic Plan.
The Kübler-Ross Model: Understanding the Five Stages of Dying
Tools: Genially, Google Drive
My role: Researcher, Instructional designer, Developer
Client: Dr. Johana Estrada, Psychologist and professor
Challenge: Talking about death is always hard. It is essential to be sensitive and allow students to process the information and any personal experience related to the topic. It would be beneficial to have one learning material to work on learning the subject at their own pace and self-assessing.
Solution: I created an interactive presentation that explains the stages of the Kübler-Ross model while keeping in mind a trauma-informed design process. The presentation covers the model's explanation, its critics, and the reasons for learning about it. It also includes six multiple-choice questions to help the user assess their learning. I carefully evaluated the images and questions used for the knowledge check, ensuring they aligned with a trauma-informed perspective.
The Stages of Dying Model is a five-stage framework that describes the emotional and physical changes that people go through as they approach death. It's a sensitive topic, and having an eLearning study material allows students to review and reflect on the stages at their own pace. Some students may have experienced grief related to this topic. Working at their rhythm will allow them to process their emotional responses to this topic and explore how to serve their future patients better.
Result: Dr. Estrada was delighted with the final project. It will impact various courses at two private universities in Puerto Rico.
The client granted permission to use it in my portfolio.
